Upcycled Suitcase for Engagement Cards

I've been pinning wedding ideas on my Pinterest page for the last few years, doesn't everybody?! Now the time has come for me to finally make those ideas a reality and I've absolutely loved visiting craft shops the last few months to buy all my supplies. I've tried to craft as many as our decorations as possible with the suitcase being one of my favourites to do.

It's our engagement party today and I knew that, as many of the people coming were people we hadn't had the chance to see since I said yes to his proposal we would need something to keep any cards or gifts in, wishful thinking eh?

I'd seen lots of ideas on Pinterest on ways to collect cards and the one that kept jumping out at me were upcycled suitcases. Both my Grandfathers passed seven years ago and I wanted to incorporate them both in some way in our celebration so I've borrowed one of my Grandfather's old Naval cases to do just that.

I used soft yarn, cardboard hearts and peach pom poms to create the cards garland to hang on the case. I also bought some fabric scraps from Fabric Land to re-line the case and protect it. Using a tape measure, I measured the inside of the case and then cut each piece of fabric to size.

I wanted it to be mismatched so it gave the case more character. Using 3D Transparent dots, I attached the fabric inside to hold each piece in place while causing the least amount of damage I possibly could. I'm so happy with the result as it's exactly what I had in mind, I just wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off. We'll probably use the same case for our wedding too as again I'd like to incorporate both Grandfathers again.

What do you think of the final piece? I can't wait to share more photos of our decorations!

  1. I picked up a second hand suitcase from a car boot a few months ago but because we don't have the space for it, it's been sitting in my Dad's garage waiting to be up-cycled but I have a good few months to go yet. Pinned this lovely DIY for reference ❤️ Also a million kudos for attempting something from Pinterest, I'm almost too scared to try my own ideas just yet!
