Buying Followers on Instagram

I didn't really plan this post but after seeing the odd few tweets floating about I kinda needed to put my thoughts down. I have been using Instagram from the get go because I love photography, sharing my experiences and also seeing what everyone else is up to in the world. I call it being inquisitive others refer to it as being damn right nosey.

I think by now everyone is pretty aware of Instagram's latest update but that's not why I am writing this post, I'm writing this post because I'm sick of seeing the age old, "That blogger has obviously bought their followers" yadda yadda. Now don't get me wrong, that definitely does happen and it can look pretty obvious but what I'm seeing more and more is bloggers slating each other due to this reason and half the time it's pretty uncalled for especially thanks to Instagram's new feed layout.

I don't have a crazy amount of followers on Instagram but I do have a few thousand so I'm going to wade in with my opinion. At the beginning of the year my likes per photo were kinda on par with my followers, I was getting a few hundred likes per post, between 300-500 which for a small time blogger like myself was pretty good. Fast forward to after the recent update and I'm lucky if I get 150-200 likes per photo and my followers are now over 10K.

I'm not getting annoyed because my photos aren't getting the likes, I'm getting annoyed because in the bitchy corner of the blog world the above automatically translates to "Well they must be buying their followers because the photo likes don't match their following". SMH. I keep seeing the same group of bloggers slating one blogger who has worked their damn arse off and right now, it's paying off. The followers are jumping and so are the opportunities and do you know what? It's sad to see that success sometimes translates to cheating for some people. It's even sadder to see people publicly moaning and bitching because someone is on the route to something pretty incredible.

Instagram has done a pretty crap thing for a lot of us, Facebook has well and truly taken control and I'm not liking it but that doesn't mean I'm not going to stop sharing my life, what I'm eating and expertly angled selfies. So I won't get as many likes or comments as I use to... so what? It doesn't mean I'm buying my followers or anyone else for that matter. Stop spreading poison, stop causing unnecessary issues and stop dragging people's hard earned reputations through the mud because it'll be that, that your name is recognised for, not your banging blog post on the latest must have lipsticks.

(Ps. The photo in this post is pretty irrelevant but they are photos I've shared on my own Instagram so it kinda fits *hides face*).

  1. I completely agree with that, I have noticed a dip in my last few posts as well and I guess to someone scrolling through their feed it would look a bit suspect, but even if some random blogger did buy their followers I am not sure why people would feel so strongly about it? It is their money and their prerogative, it's really nobody's business. The amount of emails I get asking if I want a sponsored shoutout on Instagram is ridiculous, I am not into paying for followers just because it is not that important to me, but other people have different priorities and that's okay. Why would anyone feel the need to name and shame them? Sorry, I am ranting a little now, this isn't aimed at you, of course, I completely agree with this post and what you have said. It comes off a little catty, doesn't it? I'll go stalk you on Instagram now haha xxx

  2. I love this post so much - I hardly have any followers on Instagram by blogger standards so it's not really an issue that's affected me personally, but it is an argument I keep seeing online and it's getting a bit tiresome. At the end of the day, even if somebody else HAS bought followers I don't understand how that affects us, or why there's a need to get bitchy about it. If we could all support each other a little better the blogging community would be even more awesome than it already is :)

    1. Thank you! I'm just so sick of the drama and the bitching because half of them wouldn't even know anyway! xx

  3. It wouldn't even cross my mind that a blogger would buy followers- especially if they're sharing content like you. The bitchy negativity coming from some people is totally unnecessary- we should be supporting each other :)

  5. It must just be the people I follow cos I hardly ever - if ever! - see any bitchiness towards other bloggers! I didn't realise buying followers was a legit thing, at least not for most bloggers out there who take it seriously. Thing is, we all know Instagram has changed and so it's harder to see your favourite people posting, especially if they are a 'smaller' blogger, so anyone with common sense would notice that you're not buying followers, you've just been affected by this algorithm change. Which, for the record, I loathe, because I rarely see any of my blogging friends on my feed now, and I just see massive accounts which sucks. Instagram for me has defo become a little less enjoyable.

  6. This is a hard subject I think. On one hand I completely see what you mean. However on the other it's wrong to buy a following and people that do clearly know that or it wouldn't be a secret. There is one blogger that shot up 10's of 1000's in the space of a month- it's clear they are bought by looking. A new blogger asked for help on how to gain followers thinking it was organic growth. The advice she was given was to advertise her page on local selling pages.... Basically if you are going to do it don't then give others empty advice and say they'll get 1000's of followers.
As far as Instagram changes go I have noticed the bigger accounts at the top but I am still seeing my blogger friends although not as frequently. What is has done is make me much more conscious about liking or commenting on a picture. I'm much more likely to do so now. Xx

    1. It's completely wrong to buy followers and if you're doing that then you're deceiving so many people. It's not on. Especially when others want advice. I think my problem with it, is people just throwing shade when they have no back up to it whatsoever xxx
